REISSUES OF RARE LAURINDO ALMEIDA

Laurindo AlmeidaLaurindo Almeida HomeWOW! Got a email from Don Carnes. He is the personal assistant to Deltra Almeida (Laurindo's former wife) and publisher of Brazilliance Publishing which works hard to preserve the legacy of Laurindo Almeida to this very day. The primary work until now have been publishing of music sheets and publishing rights of Laurindos former works. But now they are beginning to release the old and forgotten albums and tapes on CDs! Oh boy was i excited! This is truly the type of work that needs to be supported. Click on the pics to go there!

ALMEIDA TURNER IMPRESSÕES DO BRASIL

LAURINDO ALMEIDA & RAY TURNER IMPRESSÕES DO BRASIL CAPITOL RECORDS 1957 from LORONIX
What would we be without Zeca Louro and his mighty Loronix? This guy from Rio de Janeiro seem to have connections FAR beyond mine and get all the rare stuff. This record was given to Zeca from Jorge Mello and the text below is straight from Zeca Louro. Enjoy this dynaminte from Loronix.
Hello, good evening! I am very happy to update Loronix after four days, which is the largest hiatus since Loronix creation two years ago. I hope you missed myself and new music such as I did. There were four days, but seems to be four years, in the third night I had a dream I was in the middle of amazing blog posts. Anyway, I will need some adaptation time until getting the old pace, and this is the reason why I'm making this really nice record in the hope you don’t read me, kindly sent and strongly recommended by Jorge Mello. Let's see.

This is Laurindo Almeida e Ray Turner - Impressoes do Brasil (1957), for Capitol, featuring Laurindo Almeida guitar and Ray Turner piano performing a Brazilian repertoire with selected cuts from Radames Gnattali, Heitor Villa Lobos, Laurindo Almeida and the legendary Garoto. Maestro Radames Gnattali has the whole side A, the only side the unknown Ray Turner plays, while side B features two Laurindo Almeida compositions, one Villa Lobos choro and three Garoto tunes performed by Laurindo, which are the ones that I like most and worth the entire album. Thanks Jorge Mello for this first out of several unknown Laurindo Almeida LPs. Tracks include:

01 - Allegro - Concertino Nr. 2 para Violao e Piano (Radamés Gnattali)
02 - Adagio - Concertino Nr. 2 para Violao e Piano (Radamés Gnattali)
03 - Presto - Concertino Nr. 2 para Violao e Piano (Radamés Gnattali)
04 - Saudade (Radamés Gnattali)
05 - Choro Triste (Garoto)
06 - Choro Gracioso (Garoto)
07 - Nosso Choro (Garoto)
08 - Serenata (Laurindo Almeida)
09 - Crepúsculo Em Copacabana (Laurindo Almeida)
10 - Gavotta-choro (Villa-Lobos)

Please enjoy HERE

ALMEIDA & GNATTALI from LORONIX

LAURINDO ALMEIDA & RADAMES GNATTALI SUITE POPULAR BRASILEIRA TEXT WRITTEN AND POST ORIGINALY PUBLISHED ON LORONIX
This Sunday is different from all others. Under normal conditions, Sunday delivers a low traffic at Loronix, but not the second Sunday of February, lasting 3 hours to the end, this Sunday is already the busiest one in Loronix history. That's why I decided to show you a special album at the beginning, sent by my good friend cvllos as of my birthday gift. I don't need to say more, just look at this cover to understand that we are facing a historical album. Let's see.

This is Radames Gnattali e Laurindo de Almeida - Suite Popular Brasileira para Violao e Piano (1956), for the underrated Continental label. By the way, I need to say that Continental, a great label that had its peak in the 78rpm years and also in the early 70’s, recorded most of the albums released in the last five days at Loronix, Returning to this nice Continental 10-inch, Radames Gnattali delivers piano playing and all six compositions, while Laurindo Almeida plays violao eletrico "electric acoustic guitar", which is a really unusual combination. I always thought the first Brazilian album featuring violao and piano was Samambaia by Cesar Camargo Mariano and Helio Delmiro, and then comes cvllos with this one, recorded 24 years before Samambaia in the same concept. Thanks cvllos. Tracks include:

Personnel

Radames Gnattali
(piano)
Laurindo Almeida
(violao eletrico)

Track List

01 - Invocação a Xangô (Radamés Gnattali)
02 - Toada (Radamés Gnattali)
03 - Choro (Radamés Gnattali)
04 - Samba Canção (Radamés Gnattali)
05 - Baião (Radamés Gnattali)
06 - Marcha (Radamés Gnattali)

NATAL NO BRASIL VOL1 (by Bossa Brasileira)

NATAL NO BRASIL VOL1 BY BOSSA BRASILEIRA
And here is volume 1 by this brilliant christmas compilation with original brazilian cristmas hymns. ENJOY!

MERRY CHRISTMAS FELIZ NATAL

I JUST WANT TO SAY MERRY CHRISTMAS
Hi my beloved bossalovers. The clock is 15:00 Swedish time and our best christmas tradition is on. An old Disney ad movie which swedish TV has broadcasted for over 50 years. It starts now and after this its opening presents and eating good food. From all my heart a MERRY CHRISTMAS! And for all you lonely people in the world: You are not alone. There is a lot of love out there in all the sickness that plagues our fine earth in present time. If you dare to open your cold broken hearts you will find it. And my blog is all for love. THE L.A. 4 ZACA (LORONIX)

THE L.A.4 ZACA CONCORD JAZZ 1980
Hi my beloved bossa-lovers. Natanael woke up tired and sleepy. The winter in Sweden varies BIG from day to day. Yesterday it was freezing and today rainy and warm... Hmmm I would like to be in Rio right now. Dont care much for Sweden this time of year. Well im going to the computer after a nice cup of coffee and my medicin (i have ADHD and im eating a thing called Concerta) I go to Loronix as i always do the first thing after sitting down here. What do i find? THE LA4!!! Oh my GOD. Love you Zeca. The things you do for me and everyone else... This is ZACA from 1980s. Original post link HERE. Zeca told me to write some info about the group and i did. Here it follows:

OI! Thanx to Zeca for this rare post. Im happy to inform you! The L.A. 4 was a playground for Laurindo Almeida and co-musicians Bud Shank, Ray Brown, Chuck Flores (original drummer), Shelly Manne and later Jeff Hamilton replacing Flores on the drums. It was a playground cause there was no style borders for anything. They did what they felt was the most fun for the moment. The styles could include Bach, Vinicius de Moraes, Almeida (!), Cole Porter, Gerswin, Jobim etc.......... And how they interpereted these composers was set in that period of time and how they felt was the best way to make subtle music. Cause that is the only red line in all albums. Cool, smooth jazz. Like Rio de Janeiro transformed to Los Angeles. The thing is that not many ppl know that we have Laurindo de Almeida to thank for the whole bossanova-bug OUTSIDE Brazil. Many people have the impression that Jobim and Sergio Mendes made the bug in the US with thier Carneigie Hall gig. FALSE! The work of introducing the Brazilian rythms and melt it in to american jazz was made by Mr Almeida in the dreamfactory of Los Angeles in the early 50s with his Stan Kenton Orq. He then made the Brazilliance-albums with his bud, Bud Shank. This is why we had the bossa nova bug in the US. Laurindo de Almeida was a BIG influence to Mr Jobim. Im not joking. But taking credit was not the strong side of Laurindo. He wanted to play the guitar. Nothing else. Well.... After his success in the US in the 60s and 70s he teamed up with Bud Shank once again to create The L.A.4.
Discography (incomplete)

The official years you said are right Zeca. 1974-1982. But the LA4 lived for as long Laurindo lived. In various compilations and live gigs in the US. And thanx again for the post.

ORIGINAL TEXT AS IN LORONIX IS IN THE POSTS BELOW.
PLEASE GRAB ZACA FROM 1980 FROM MIGHTY LORONIX HERE.
AS ALWAYS IN ZECA´s HEROISM THERE IS 2 LINKS FOR FLAC (BETTER QUALITY) AND THEY ARE HERE & HERE

COLLABORATION 1964

THE MODERN JAZZ QUARTET WITH LAURINDO ALMEIDA COLLABORATION PHILIPS 1964 OUT OF PRINT
Hi and hello my dear co-bossa-lovers. This is an old post (one of the first of the blog actually) and ive forgotten about it and its grace until “jolly bossa chap” sent me a link to this masterpiece. And for his sake and for musiclovers here is a repost of bossa novas greater albums of all time. MJQ maybe the most casual jazz bands of all time. They experimented in a wide range of styles and their sign um was improvisation of all kind in any form. As old musicians behind Dizzy Gillespie they aught to know how to right?..... The backbone of the quartet was Milt Jackson (vibraphone) and John Lewis (piano) and they found a perfect match in Laurindo Almeida on guitar when to catch up in the new beat trend of Brazil. Casual meets casual = MJQ & Laurindo Almeida “Collaboration”. 1964 for Philips, gift by “jolly bossa chap” please enjoy HERE.

Please download brazilian original covers by Benutti HERE.

THE L.A. 4 MONTAGE

THE L.A 4 MONTAGE CONCORD JAZZ 1981
Oh wow. This is a special day. My excitement makes me num in my fingers. Cant imagine what to write. Ill take it from the start... I got a post from a brazilian geezer called bonito. He runs a blog in portuguese called Regalame esta noche. Click the pic! This guy is supernice. And he had a L.A 4 album in his posts! The thing is that The L.A. 4 is quite hard to get (if you like me dont have any credit cards)
What is the L.A 4? It was a playground for the four giants Laurindo Almeida (guitar), Bud Shank (flute), Ray Brown (bass) and Jeff Hamilton. (drums) They recorded easy listening albums from late 70s to Laurindos death in 1995. They also played quite many liveshows in the US. The albums are playful but still serious, wild but still elegant. I would give my right hand to see them live....
This is Montage from 1981, given to us by the great bonito. Please pay him a visit if not done so already.
Tracks are:
Madame Butterball
Syrinx
Samba for Ray (Listen below)
Teach me tonight
Rado´s got the blues
My romance
Bachianas Brasileiras #5
Squatty Roo

Please enjoy this gift from bonito HERE.

Well this music will have to do. Please enjoy these 15 cocktail-tracks HERE.

LENITA BRUNO WORK OF LOVE (LAURINDO ALMEIDA GUITAR) NUCLEUS RECORDS 1967
OI! Natanael have been on the sunny side of life for a while but exhausted by other matters. I will get out my big wallet after new year and buy the "impossible" albums.... You can figure the rest out by yourselves. If you want to contribute to this blog and post any album which you currently have in possesion please mail me or send it to THIS address. Your name will be credited if you want or anonymous if this is your will.
Well what is this? This is Lenita Bruno Work of love from 1967. This is the evidence for Laurindo´s greatness. I stumble over his works everywere and there is NO way to know it all. There is work being done for a database of ALL Laurindo´s studio gigs. Think im excited? This album-post wouldnt be possible without the mighty Loronix and his magnificant music rescue work. Thanx Zeca. (and for this particular MR T )The stuff you do for brazilian music and its survival have no competition. A funny anecdote is that it was Zeca Louro who inpsired me to open this blog. And he was the one helping me out in the start. He introduced me to Youtube and the jungle of stuff you need to know about in the blogworld. That makes you to the godfather of "Laurindo de Almeida :: Boss of the nova ::" Zeca.... Muito brigado! To all of you: Please take this one. The bossa nova version of Hector Vila Lobos "Bachians Brasileiras #5" is a must! Please listen to it below! The info from Loronix follows here:

Today is Mr. E. birthday, Happy Birthday Mr. E. and in spite of being a special date to Mr. E. the gift is from Mr. E. to Lonixers. I really glad to celebrate Mr. E. birthday on such a wonderful manner, making another of those awesome Mr. E. releases. This is Lenita Bruno - Work of Love (1967), for Nucleus Records (USA). It is a shame that I never knew this album existence before, an important album recorded by a really important Brazilian singer, making her first appearance at Loronix. There is a lot to say about this release, Work of Love has the participation of renowned American Musicians, such as Clare Fischer as arranger, Laurindo Almeida, Bud Shank, Paulinho da Costa, Jose Marino, among others. Lenita Bruno recorded an essential record for Festa in 1959, Por Toda a Minha Vida, with arrangements by Antonio Carlos Jobim and Leo Peracchi, which is considered as important as the legendary Cancao do Amor Demais by many reviewers.Work of Love is part of Lenita Bruno discography in the United States, where she released also Lenita Bruno em Hollywood, just a year after this one. Thanks a million Mr. E. for providing Loronixers with such wonderful music and before I forget, happy birthday. Tracks include:

REPOST VIVA! BOSSA NOVA

REPOST LAURINDO ALMEIDA & BOSSANOVA ALLSTARS VIVA! BOSSANOVA CAPITOL 1962
Hi ppl! This is a salut from a sunny south Sweden this Thursday of the 18th. They have opened a brand new swimming hall in Höör were i live. Been there twice today. I feel GREAT! Visit Bjorkvik Auqarena HERE. Well...

This is a repost of my alltime favourite album of the king. (second best is Guitar from Ipanema) I posted the "other" VIVA (Olé bossa nova) a while ago. These albums belong together like sister and brother. They launched Laurindo Almeida in the US. They also made bossa nova the BUG it became. Before these albums Laurindo was a pure studio knight with guestplays on most of the records containing the words "bossa nova". On these (VIVA and OLÉ) he launched the Laurindosound for the big public together with his mates in The bossanova allstars. They both went high in the charts once and for all making Laurindo Almeida the true father of bossa. Please feel free to enjoy HERE.
